There are approximately 5,000 Native Americans living
in Cuyahoga County and over 70% of them are living at or below the poverty
level. During the holidays many of these people, these families, must go
without the feasts and presents that are traditional to the season.
We at the American Indian Education Center try to make
the holidays brighter for the children of the Native American community
In past years our local United States Marine Corps Unit
has helped to collect and donate toys for the party. Tragically, many of
the young men and women of that unit have been lost to us through the war in
Iraq over the past year. Therefore, we need your support more than ever in
our effort to collect toys for our kids.
The American Indian Education Center is the only 501©3
Native American community center in Cuyahoga County. We have been helping
families with food and clothing donations since 1992. The Center currently
runs programs to: help strengthen families by improving communication;
assist people in their desire to quit smoking and other use of commercial
tobacco; and focus upon health issues specific to Native Americans / Alaska
Natives.
Please consider helping us to make this Christmas
special for Native American children with your monetary donation or new
toys.
We will be happy to declare your support in all of the
literature we publish, including "Smoke Signals." Our quarterly newspaper,
and encourage Cleveland's Native Americans to support your business.
